In 1995, an IDS special issue was published called ‘Towards Democratic Governance’. Focused mainly on the global south, the issue pointed at challenges for promoting democracy, but also reflected optimism about democracy being on the rise, and with high hopes that democracy and development could be intertwined. At present, democracies around the world face threats from (elected) political leaders and anti-democratic forces in politics and society. At the same time, actions promoting autocratization and polarization are contested in various ways.
Watch now
In 2025, IDS will publish a new IDS Bulletin on democracy, which will be more global in outlook to recognize how democracy faces threats across the global north and south, and ask new questions about the relationship between democracy and development. This seminar, involving some of the authors of the 1995 issue as well as newer authors, will address this debate. The audience is warmly invited to join the discussion and thus shape ideas for next year’s Bulletin.
