Fifty years ago this year, Dr Budd Hall, then a visiting fellow at IDS, wrote what has come to be known the first published journal article on the idea of participatory research (PR). Since then, bringing together many different currents and influencers, PR has emerged as a major strategy and practice around the world.

Celebrating this fifty year history, in this seminar we will be joined in person by Budd Hall, now the UNESCO Co-Chair in Community-Based Research and Social Responsibility in Higher Education, to reflect on the early years of PR and how it has spread and grown over the last five decades. Juan Mario Diaz (Sheffield) will share his current work on documenting the history of Participatory Action Research (PAR), and why this is relevant for today’s PR community. IDS fellow Jo Howard will locate herself and IDS in this history, and share reflections on recent and current participatory work. We will also be joined online by Marina Apgar (IDS) and Jiniya Afroze (Terre des Hommes, Bangladesh), current pioneers of systemic approaches to participatory action research.
We will then open up the conversation and explore current and future challenges for PR as it approaches the next fifty years. John Gaventa, an IDS fellow whose early work was influenced by Budd many years ago will chair the session.
