Sussex Development Lecture: Learning from the Millennium Development Goals

10 March 2011 17:00–18:30

Chichester Lecture Theatre, University of Sussex

Sussex Development Lecture event, co-organised by IDS

Part of the event series, Sussex Development Lectures

Learning from the Millennium Development Goals

David Hulme – Head of Institute for Policy Development and Management, Executive Director, Brooks World Poverty.

About the lecture

This lecture moves on from the question of, ‘Will the MDGs be achieved?’ to ask ‘What have the MDGs achieved?’. It argues that the Goals should be judged in terms of whether or not they have advanced the international social norm of ‘ending poverty’ or not. Post 2015, we need to think about whatever succeeds the MDGs in terms of the way they impact on social norms as much as on a programming device.

About the speaker

David Hulme is Professor of Development Studies and Director of the Brooks World Poverty Institute at the University of Manchester. He has worked on rural development, poverty and poverty reduction, microfinance, the role of NGOs in development, environmental management, social protection and the political economy of global poverty for more than 30 years. His main focus has been on Bangladesh but he has worked extensively across South Asia, East Africa and the Pacific.

This event will be followed by a drinks reception.
