New network to boost UK-China collaboration for global development

Published on 11 January 2021

The Institute of Development Studies together with partners in China and the UK today launch a new network that will help boost collaborative links between researchers in both countries. The China Global Development Knowledge Network will build long-term cooperation on a variety of development research topics and provide the evidence needed to inform China’s global development and help achieve the UN Global Goals.

China’s size and strategic importance means that its growth and growing influence, through global governance institutions and initiatives such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the Belt and Road Initiative, has become increasingly critical for global development. This is especially the case in the context of the UN Global Goals, where China’s actions and investments, alone and in co-operation with other countries including the UK, will have a major influence on capacities to achieve multiple goals in a range of low- and middle-income countries.

Cooperation between China and other major development actors, including the UK, is crucial in realising these Goals. This new Network responds to an increasing need for UK-Chinese collaboration by providing a platform for Chinese and British researchers and government policy officials to work together to respond to new joint opportunities.

Supported by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the Network will benefit researchers, policymakers, practitioners, students, the media and anyone interested in Chinese-UK cooperation in global development. Evidence-based research is central to development and the network provides opportunities for researchers from both nations to promote their work and to engage with others who have a professional interest in the role of China in development.

The China Global Development Knowledge Network website showcases the latest research from network members and their organisations, alongside a directory of research programmes and institutions involved in key global development themes, as well as relevant funding calls and grants and job opportunities. It also highlights the Network’s latest newsblogs and details of forthcoming events and activities.

The Network is coordinated by the IDS-led UK Anchor Institution for the China International Development Research Network and the IDS Centre for Rising Powers and Global Development, in partnership with the China International Development Research Network.

To register your interest in the Network, please subscribe to the e-newsletter.
