The Impact of Trade Policies on Pakistan’s Preferential Access to the European Union

The overall objective of this study is to consider the impact of trade policies, and notably those of the EU in South Asia, on Pakistan’s preferential access to the EU and on Pakistan’s overall trade performance.

A core component of the study is a quantitative simulation analysis based on a global computable general equilibrium trade model. The simulation analysis takes account of Pakistan’s recent bilateral trade agreements with China, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, its membership of the evolving South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) and a potential completion of the WTO Doha Round. The model is then used to assess the indirect effects of the EU’s envisaged preferential trade agreements with India, Korea and ASEAN on Pakistan’s economy.
