Introduction: Sustaining Growth and Ending Poverty in Asia

Published on 1 July 2006

Asia has witnessed an unprecedented period of growth and poverty reduction over the past decade. Sustained growth has contributed to a dramatic reduction in poverty and vastly improved standards of living in most Asian countries.

The majority of countries are making steady progress towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as a result of economic growth and increased public investment in health and education services. People are living longer, literacy rates are improving and infant and maternal mortality rates are falling.
