A CLARISSA Action Research Group was created with the business owners of massage parlours and spa venues in a tourist area in Kathmandu Valley, where the project's life story collection had gathered evidence that many children (girls) arrived from villages in Kathmandu in search of work.

CLARISSA formed three Participatory Action Research groups in Nepal with small business owners operating in the adult entertainment sector (AES) to better understand the dynamics of running small, informal AES businesses that contribute to the emergence and perpetuation of worst forms of child labour. The project's in-depth interviews with business owners revealed that many children who newly arrive in Kathmandu work in a khaja ghar ('snack shop') because the job does not require qualifications, experience, or legal documents.

How, for whom, and under what conditions does Participatory Action Research (PAR) generate innovation to tackle the drivers of the worst forms of child labour (WFCL)? This paper presents the findings of a realist evaluation that investigated how PAR groups facilitated children who work in exploitative and harmful labour and business owners in the leather industry in Bangladesh and the adult entertainment sector in Nepal to generate innovative actions. These PAR groups were facilitated over a period of 18 months to two years by non-governmental organisation professionals trained in PAR approaches.

The formation of CLARISSA Nepal Action Research Group 5 was prompted by recurring issues around children’s mental health and overall wellbeing that emerged through the research. The children involved are exposed to various forms of exploitation, abuse, trauma, and violence, all of which have a profound and adverse impact on their mental health.

This document reports on a CLARISSA Nepal Action Research Group located in a major entry and exit point for Kathmandu Valley. The theme explored by the group was: children engaged in the worst forms of child labour due to the poor economic condition of their family. This unique group comprised children from diverse backgrounds (both boys and girls, and children working in diverse types of work – from ‘party place’ workers to domestic labourers and street vending children).
