IDS would like to congratulate Drs Lawrence Haddad and David Nabarro for winning the 2018 World Food Prize. They were rewarded for their individual but complementary global leadership in elevating child and maternal nutrition to a critical priority in the international development dialogue.
Haddad’s work on nutrition spans three decades. As well as being IDS Director from 2004 to 2014, he taught at the University of Warwick for 3 years, was a researcher at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), and in 2014 he was a founding co-chair of the Global Nutrition Report. He is now Executive Director of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN).
Haddad continues to work with IDS on a Transform Nutrition short course, designed to arm policymakers and practitioners with the knowledge and skills to more effectively design, improve and implement strategic approaches to address nutrition issues at regional, national and global levels.
Nabarro, previously coordinator of the United Nation’s Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement between 2010 and 2014, led a global effort joining 54 countries and one Indian state to implement policies and programs that fight child malnutrition in South Asia and Africa. Nabarro continues to oversee SUN on its advisory lead group.
Haddad and Nabarro will receive the World Food Prize at a ceremony in the Iowa State Capitol building in Des Moines, Iowa, on 18 October 2018. The event is the centerpiece of the Borlaug Dialogue International Symposium, a three-day event which regularly draws over 1,200 people from 50 countries to discuss cutting-edge issues in global food security.
