Project

Urbanisation and Changing Food Systems Addressing the Nutrition Transition

We plan to develop a research network and carry out background research on urban food environments in rapidly growing cities and towns in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia with the goal of applying for a major GCRF call (and additional calls) in 2017/8.

Our work will contribute to an emerging interdisciplinary research agenda on the role of informality, migration and pluralistic market systems in shaping urban nutritional outcomes. These are all areas in which Sussex, IDS and partners can demonstrate global leadership. Our proposal is being submitted under SSRP research theme 3, food security, biodiversity and urban/rural dynamics. By comparing distinct urban and peri-urban settings, the project seeks to understand the synergies and trade-offs between SDG 2, ending all forms of hunger and malnutrition, SDG 11, achieving sustainable cities and SDG 5 on gender equality. SDG 13 on climate will also be considered within the context of the impact of climate change on food security.
