The Rise of the East: What Does it Mean for Development Studies

Published on 1 January 2007

The article starts by highlighting the rise of the East, focusing in particular on the growth and transformation of China.

It then distinguishes between four broad strands of development studies and shows how each strand is affected by the rise of the East. It concludes by discussing the need for a new vocabulary to make sense of the new world and – closely related to this – the need to break through a psychological barrier: analysing how the former ‘periphery’ is now driving change in the ‘centre’.
