Gender inequalities are shaping how the HIV epidemic evolves and in order to engage men as ‘part of the solution’ we must deal with issues of male power. Work on women’s equality is centrally concerned with structures of male power within society and how social, economic and political institutions reproduce them. These structures still predominate in most societies and gendered analyses of women’s vulnerability in HIV transmission and its impacts show that change is needed.
