Online
Time: 8am UK or 6pm Papua New Guinea & Australia

How can global knowledge generation, sharing and professional learning lead to transformative change towards more sustainable and equitable societies in the Pacific islands? Join development leaders and Fellows from the Institute of Development Studies to find out more.

Watch now

States and small islands in the Pacific face an urgent and complex set of development and sustainability challenges. Issues such as climate justice, governance, power, conflict, migration and gender equality require policy making that is informed by knowledge sharing, collaboration, professional learning and, above all, strengthened leadership.

But, how can this best be achieved and what should be done to develop your skills and the capacity of your organisation?

In this event, senior leaders from the Institute of Development Studies with special guests – and IDS Alumni – David Kavanamur, Economic and Infrastructure Adviser to the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, and Barbara Thomas, Deputy Team Leader at Catalpa International working with the Government of Papua New Guinea’s Department of Implementation and Rural Development – will share their experiences and how professional development has informed their ability to develop policy that responds to the disruptions faced by islanders.

Chaired by IDS alum, Trustee and current Alumni Advisory Committee Chair, Esther McIntosh, Director at the Papua New Guinea-Australia Governance Partnership in Papua New Guinea, the event will address the challenges of policy making and development research in the Pacific Islands and opportunity of training and learning at the Institute of Development Studies.

Partnered with the University of Sussex, the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) delivers world-class research, learning and teaching that transforms the knowledge, action and leadership needed for more equitable and sustainable development globally. It is ranked first in the world for development studies, together with the University of Sussex, and ranked best international development policy think tank.
