AI in tax administration: Opportunities, risks and emerging practice

25 June 2025 14:00–15:00

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the way governments manage data, detect fraud, and engage with citizens—and tax administrations are no exception. From chatbots and risk scores to automated audits and predictive analytics, AI holds the promise of smarter, faster, and more efficient tax systems. But can it deliver, especially in the complex realities of low- and middle-income countries?

Computer generated graphics swirl around the letters 'AI' above a person's hand. Only to torso of the person is visible, wearing a dark blue shirt in front of a black background.

This webinar, hosted by the IDS-based International Centre for Tax and Development (ICTD), is the third session of the World Bank–ICTD series on digitalisation and tax.

The webinar will dive into cutting-edge developments in AI and their implications for tax policy and administration. We’ll explore practical use cases from J-PAL (MIT) research in Africa, funded through the DigiFI initiative, combined with more theoretical considerations from ongoing World Bank work on the topic.

Speakers

  • Joseph Eloi, World Bank Group

  • Victor Pouliquen, University of Essex

Moderated by Fabrizio Santoro, ICTD/IDS.
