Contribute to emerging discussions on social protection in crises

Published on 1 June 2022

Better Assistance in Crises (BASIC) Research is collaborating with socialprotection.org throughout June to deliver an interactive e-discussion series on delivering social assistance in crises contexts.

With the upswell of humanitarian crises, including in Ukraine, Tigray, Yemen, and elsewhere, understanding social protection in crises – and how it interfaces with humanitarian responses – is more critical than ever.  Thus, these e-discussions will bring together practitioners, researchers, policymakers, and anyone interested to engage and promote a realistic and forward-looking research and policy agenda for targeting social assistance in acute and protracted crises – through BASIC Research and beyond.

Overview of e-discussions

The thematic discussions will involve asynchronous online discussions in the Social Protection in Crisis Contexts discussion forum on socialprotection.org, where participants can reply to the questions posed on the chat forum at any point during the week. Some discussion forums will be complemented by informal Zoom hangouts where people can reflect on what has been discussed or ask more questions. The e-discussion series will focus on five themes:

  • Systems: Thurs 26 May (Zoom webinar) – completed
  • Targeting: Tues 7 – 10 June (E-Discussion and hangout)
  • Politics: Mon 13 – Fri 17 June (E-Discussion and hangout)
  • Accountability: Mon 20 – Fri 24 June (E-Discussion)
  • Climate: Mon 27 June – Fri 1 July (E-Discussion and hangout)

Targeting in crises e-discussion

On Tuesday 7 June 2022, the targeting in crises discussion facilitated by Rachel Sabates-Wheeler (Research Fellow, IDS; Co-Executive Director of BASIC Research) and Emily Wylde (Economist specialising in social policy, independent; BASIC Researcher) will kick off. This e-discussion will explore questions and debates on targeting humanitarian and social protection responses in crisis contexts, including how targeting enables objectives, criteria for successful targeting, the impact of institutional orthodoxies, and the role of community perceptions in targeting.
