This project entails an initial scoping study in Rajasthan and Western UP to firm up research questions that are relevant and useful for understanding the politics and implementation of the MGNREGA.
The field work focuses on interactions and interviews with government officials, elected representatives of village level institutions and workers at worksites. This will feed into a 1 day workshop with ESID partners to discuss core research questions for the next phase of work.
A paper will be produced on a conceptual framework with which the politics of implementation of MGNREGA can be examined. The paper will draw on the initial fieldwork findings and the discussion from the 1 day workshop. The conceptual framework will underpin the next stage of research on the politics of MGNREGA’s implementation and will also be disseminated through a peer-reviewed journal.
