Statement on Palestine

Published on 12 December 2023

In the context of an escalating humanitarian crisis for the people of Gaza, IDS notes with sadness the failure of the United Nations Security Council to call for an immediate ceasefire in the war on Gaza.

Professor Melissa Leach, Director of the Institute of Development Studies, says:

“We support the entirety of the United Nations Secretary-General’s letter of December 6, in particular his call for a humanitarian ceasefire. This is essential in order to secure urgent protection for civilians and the safe delivery of emergency aid, amid the worsening humanitarian crisis.

“This horrific trajectory of violence does not and will not lead to justice for either Palestinians or Israelis in the region and beyond, either now or in the future. At IDS we will continue to use our combined intellectual resources, people and networks to work for humanity and equity in the region.”
